Yes — most TVs can safely go above a fireplace if the wall stays cool and the mount handles the height. Run the fire for an hour and test: if the wall above the mantel gets hotter than about 100°F, fix the heat problem or mount the TV elsewhere.
The fireplace wall is usually the natural focal point of the room, which is why this is one of the most-requested installs our TV mounting service handles. It is also the install with the most fine print. Heat, viewing angle, and what is hiding behind the wall each deserve a real answer before anyone drills into a chimney breast — so here they are, in the order we check them on the job.
Will Fireplace Heat Damage the TV?
Electronics and sustained heat do not mix. Most TV manufacturers rate their sets for an operating environment up to roughly 95–104°F; above that, you shorten panel life and give the manufacturer grounds to deny a warranty claim. The question is never "do fireplaces make heat" — it is whether that heat reaches the spot where the TV will hang. A deep mantel acts as a shelf that kicks rising heat away from the wall, a sealed gas insert throws far less wall heat than an open wood fire, and many fireplaces get used a handful of evenings a year.
You do not have to guess. Test your actual fireplace before mounting:
- Tape a simple thermometer to the wall where the center of the TV would sit (painter's tape, so the paint survives).
- Run the fireplace the way you actually use it — full flame, doors and blower in their normal positions — for a full hour.
- Read the thermometer. Under about 100°F, the location passes. Over that, add a mantel, mount higher, use a pull-down mount that stows the TV out of the plume, or pick another wall.
In our experience across San Diego, most gas fireplaces with a mantel pass this test comfortably. Open wood-burning fireboxes with no mantel are the usual failures — and also the setups that coat a low-hung TV in fine soot over time.
Is the Viewing Angle Too High?
This is the honest downside nobody's Pinterest board mentions. Above a typical 54-inch-high mantel wall, the center of the screen lands at 60 inches or more — well above the 42-inch seated eye level that makes a TV comfortable to watch. (The full math is in our guide to how high to mount a TV.) The result is a sustained upward gaze of 15 degrees or more, which is exactly the posture that leaves your neck sore after a long movie.
Three things soften the problem. Distance: the farther back you sit, the flatter the angle — at 12 feet, an above-mantel TV is far more tolerable than at 7. Tilt: angling the screen 5–15 degrees downward aims the picture at the sofa and kills ceiling-light reflections. And recline: if your sofa reclines even slightly, your natural gaze rises to meet the screen. If none of those apply to your room, take the angle seriously — it is the number-one regret in above-fireplace installs.
What Are Your Mounting Options Above a Fireplace?
Four approaches cover nearly every fireplace wall we see. The right one depends on your heat-test result, seating distance, and budget:

The pull-down mantel mount deserves a special mention because it removes both objections at once: stowed, the TV sits flat and high like artwork; pulled down, it hangs in front of the mantel at true eye level, out of the rising heat while the fireplace burns. The hardware is counterbalanced, so lowering a 65-inch TV takes one hand. It costs more than a tilt mount and demands precise anchoring — this is the one fireplace option we would never call a DIY job.
What Is Behind a Fireplace Wall?
Fireplace walls hide more variety than any other wall we open up. Solid brick chimney breasts take masonry anchors and a hammer drill. Stone or manufactured-stone veneer is trickier — the veneer itself is not structural, so fasteners must reach the block or framing behind it. And a huge share of San Diego homes built from the 1980s onward have a prefab firebox inside a wood-framed chase covered in drywall, which mounts almost like a normal wall once the studs are located. Many of those 1990s–2000s tract homes in neighborhoods like Rancho Peñasquitos and Carmel Valley even include a built-in niche above the firebox, sized for the deep TVs of that era — modern flat panels usually need a bracket that brings them flush with the opening.
Two hard rules apply regardless of construction. Never drill into the flue or firebox itself, and treat anything within the firebox clearance zones as off-limits for combustible hardware. Field note — A surprising number of the fireplace installs we do in San Diego are for fireplaces that get lit maybe five nights a year. When a customer tells us that, we still run the heat test — but the real conversation becomes the viewing angle, because they will watch that screen 300 nights a year whether the fire is on or not.

Does mounting a TV above a fireplace void the warranty?
It can. Most manufacturers specify a maximum operating temperature around 95 to 104°F, and heat damage traced to a fireplace install is routinely denied as environmental damage. If the wall above your mantel passes the one-hour heat test, you are inside those limits; if it fails, fix the heat path before mounting.
Can you hide the wires in a fireplace wall?
Often, but it depends on construction. A framed chase with drywall allows normal in-wall routing with a code-rated power relocation kit. Solid brick or stone cannot be fished, so cables run through a painted surface raceway, through an adjacent framed wall, or up from components in nearby cabinetry.
How much lower does a pull-down mantel mount bring the TV?
Most pull-down mounts lower the screen 20 to 30 inches, dropping it from above the mantel to roughly seated eye level in front of the fireplace. They counterbalance the TV's weight, so the motion is one-hand smooth, and they tilt so the picture stays square while lowered.
Is above-fireplace mounting okay for an OLED TV?
Be extra careful. OLED panels are thinner and generally less tolerant of sustained heat than LED/LCD sets, and their manufacturers publish similar temperature limits with less margin. A working gas fireplace under an OLED needs a deep mantel, a verified cool wall, or a pull-down mount that keeps the panel out of the heat plume.
